PCH Winner Reactions Are Never Ho-Hum
Recently there was an article in The New York Times regarding how one can feel like an “odd man out” when you sit in the audience of a show that has gotten rave reviews. Everyone around you seems to be “lapping it up” – except you. People are howling with laughter and ready to jump to their feet in a standing ovation while you sit there mute and think to yourself: “What is going on here? What is wrong with me? I’m not enjoying this one bit! Let me out’a here!”
The writer of the article, Charles Isherwood, went on to suggest that if we feel that way we shouldn’t beat ourselves up. After all, members of an audience interpret a show through their own “individual prisms.”
I know how Isherwood feels. There have been many times at the movies or at a live performance when the reaction of those around me is markedly different from mine.
Still, in all my years of presenting fabulous Big Checks to stunned Publishers Clearing House winners, I’ve never witnessed an “odd man out” PCH winner reaction. Everyone – and I mean everyone – is thrilled and happy: the winner, the family, the neighbors and passers-by, co-workers (if we surprise the winner on the job), reporters from the media, and all of us from the PCH Prize Patrol. Sure, we’ve seen this “show” hundreds of times; but it’s always as exciting as “opening night.”
Well, you may be thinking to yourself, “That’s all well and good; but right now I feel like an ‘odd man out’ because I still haven’t won!”
