Memories came flooding back of many a Big Check and each emotion-charged winning moment of past prize winners from nearby places. All this was prompted by road signs for Bonduel and Shawano that I saw while en route to awarding PCH Sweepstakes prizes in Appleton, Wisconsin in March and again in April.
I remember our Prize Patrol waiting in our trusty van on the side of a cornfield one frigid night in Bonduel as we waited – for hours! – for Marilyn Thorne to come home from work. As I recall, she was employed in social services in Green Bay and was working late to help the needy in that city. When she finally drove in around midnight, her grown children were waiting to celebrate their mother’s good fortune. I remember there was tremendous shock when we presented the Big Check to Marilyn — and lots of hugging in that winning moment!
Realizing that very afternoon that we were not far from Shawano, we drove over there for a short visit to Shirley and Alfred Teetzen, PCH prize winners from a few years before. They were happy to see us again, and we reminisced on how thrilled they had been when notified of their big win.
On the recent Wisconsin trips I naturally saw road signs for Milwaukee – that being the state’s biggest city. Over the years the Prize Patrol has awarded PCH Sweepstakes prizes to prize winners there and pulled off many a memorable PCH winning moment in Wausau, Madison Marinette, and other Wisconsin towns. I can safely say that, in addition to Big Checks, we also delivered happy memories in every one of those places. And we picked up some famous Wisconsin cheese to take home.
