Sweepstakes Winners in PCH TV Commercials Are the Best Part of the Job

Sweepstakes winners in PCH TV commercials showing surprise winning moments are what Publishers Clearing House is known for; but people often wonder what it’s like working behind the scenes here.

When folks hear I work at PCH, they always ask me if it is fun working for Publishers Clearing House. My initial answer to the question is that it is hard work keeping up with the demands of creating new and exciting sweepstakes contests and promotions. However, my follow up answer is … YES … it is fun giving away MILLIONS and MILLIONS of DOLLARS to sweepstakes winners!

As fun as my career may be, Publishers Clearing House seems to follow me wherever I go, even on my time off. I watch a movie and I see a parody of the PCH Prize Patrol. I turn on the television and see over and over again the PCH TV commercials with excited sweepstakes winners. I visit the homes of my friends and sitting on their kitchen counters are Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes packages, with entries ready to be mailed back. However, here is a story that may shock you.

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to attend the taping of a famous talk show in New York City. This was not a work-related function. It was strictly for fun. As we were waiting for the show to begin, the director instructed us to be energetic and honest about our reactions to what was being shown to us. For example, if we were surprised about a comment, we should make a surprised look on our faces. We all laughed at the instructions that we were given. What did I hear a woman in my row say? She quipped, “We should look surprised like when Publishers Clearing House comes to our house with the Big Check!” I almost fell off of my chair. Even funnier, was the fact that I was not very good with the facial expression to convey my emotional reactions. I was good only at the “pensive-type, interested” look. When I tried to look surprised, happy, or disgusted, I just burst out laughing – good thing I picked writing, not acting, for a career.

That observation got me thinking…

Do people believe that the winning moments in our PCH TV commercials are real? Could they be thinking that the sweepstakes winners in our commercials are just actors? How can we prove that the reactions are real? Well, I am here to tell you that the reactions of our sweepstakes winners are REAL! And yes, that is why working for Publishers Clearing House is so much fun. We wait on the edge of our seats to find out what each winner’s reaction will be. Most times we are pleased and it is genuinely emotional and tearful. Every now and then, there is a less gregarious winner who seems to be in total shock and disbelief. However, a SuperPrize winner is a SuperPrize winner, regardless of his or her reaction.

If you’ve sent in a sweepstakes entry for the latest PCH SuperPrize – the amazing Ultra Combo Prize that offers $5000 A Week for Life PLUS One Million Dollars upfront – I hope you’re looking in the mirror and practicing your winning moment reaction for the next PCH TV commercials.

Should you be named one of our newest sweepstakes winners, you’ll be able to turn initial disbelief into overwhelming excitement. The cameras will love you, and so will the employees of Publishers Clearing House, including me.

Good luck!

The BEST reaction I have seen on PCH was February 16, 2009. When the Prize Patrol presented the check to Gay Fairris….
She had no clue it was for her when she was talking to Dave Sayer, it even got down to the point she was thinking it was for her neighbor..SURPRISE..it actually bought tears to your eyes when you watch her winning moment. Why there isn’t a total surprise on the BIG Winner is because they are told by mail that they are down to one of 211. So they are alittle more prepared then Gay Fairris was. I wish there were more reactions like hers, it makes it more believeable! To this day I wander: “Did Gay ever get her roof fixed and what presents did she buy her grandchildren? Have a Great Day everyone! *smile*

I remember back in the early nineties, when I used to enter only by mail there was once an entry where I was told to make SURE I said, “I just won 10 million dollars from Publishers Clearing House! Now, I KNOW it’s REAL!!!” when I would be greeted at my door!! I rehearsed and rehearsed BELIEVING THAT WAS REALLY IT!!! So much for let down! You can never really know a REACTION until the event actually happens!!! And it’s genuinely REAL!!!
Thanks PCH for all you do!!
God Bless everybody!!

I am a true optimist. My mornings start out with God’s promise that everything will be okay today. HE does this by showing me all the beauty HE has created, around me. That’s how I deal with adverse things.I will always have hope; hope to win. I’m still a believer.

I am now 51, and if Dave Sayer ever comes to my door with any prize I am gonna say “It’s about frickn’ time you came to my door, I’ve only been entering for 36 years”! LOL

    Hi Joe,

All of Publishers Clearing House giveaways are conducted under the strict control of independent auditors and giveaway supervisors. Our winner selection methodologies are designed to be fair and unbiased.

There are two methods we use:

MATCHING WINNING NUMBER – Our independent auditors select a winning SuperPrize number at random. Publishers Clearing House does not know the winning number until giveaway end when the auditors reveal it to us. Throughout the life of the sweepstakes, Publishers Clearing House assigns SuperPrize numbers to outgoing Bulletins. Any one of the numbers assigned to you while the giveaway is going on could be the winning number.

RANDOM DRAWINGS – A two-step process is used for random drawings. Incoming entries are prequalified either manually, by specially trained contest judges using raffle cages, or electronically using a computer. Then, on drawing day, all qualified entries are sequentially numbered and a bingo cage is used to randomly pick the winner.

    Regards,
    Addison @ PCH

I still remember the video of when Father Mike Berner won the Publishers Clearing House SuperPrize. He was very surprised. With a satellite truck nearby, they knew something was going on, but he had no idea he was going to be the one surprised. He was wearing his black uniform and collar to.

I saw the video and one thing my picture was not on there. I would LOVE to win $5000 aweek for LIFE. That is why I am playing everyday. You see my boyfriends birthday is on the 25th of this month and I cannot even get him a card, I am not working at this time and this year I wanted to throw him the BIGGEST BIRTHDAY PARTY THAT HE HAS NEVER OR EVER HAD IN HIS LIFE. And I cannot even do that, I even wanted to purpose to him right in front of the PCH PRIZE PATROL PEOLPLE AFTER I WOULD GET THAT KNOCK ON MY DOOR. He got a flat tire yesterday and put the spare on and now that is flat, why his this happening to him, I even try to make him happy and nothing is working. I need a GUARDIAN ANGEL To try to help me. I need some kind of good luck and I feel that the PCH SWEEPSTAKES would give me that luck. Danielle Lam I hope to see you soon. YOUR FRIEND marilynh89
