A Family Business: Our Roots Continue

Publishers Clearing House started off as a family business back in 1953 when it was founded by Harold T. Mertz.  The business ran from the Mertzes’ home and from the beginning Harold’s wife, LuEsther, and their daughter, Joyce, were active participants.  As the company grew and employees were hired, the family business atmosphere was retained.

The Mertzes set a tone of being generous and caring to their employees, treating them like family.  Birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated, turkeys were handed out to everyone at Thanksgiving, and free coffee, tea and soda were provided in the company dining areas.  These traditions are still carried on today, nearly 60 years later.

The family ties have continued, too, as some of our employees are related to one another.  Joe and Pete N., for example, pictured below, are brothers.

Family Business Joe & Pete N

They both work in the PCH online creative department.  Joe and Pete like to joke that they grew up at Publishers Clearing House because their mother, Chris, used to work here.

Some of our summer interns are sons or daughters of employees, too.  They have a great work ethic, already possess a general understanding of the business and have a built-in “carpool” ride to work, so their attendance is reliable.  Here’s a photo of senior creative director Matt L. and his daughter Melanie, examining one of our PCH mailings.

Family Business Matt & Melanie

Melanie worked temporarily as an intern in our production studio, before going back to college.

PCHers often remark that our company has a family atmosphere.  True, some of us have relatives who work or have worked here, but that’s not the only reason.  Over the years of working together we’ve gotten to know each other, been through good times and challenging times and formed bonds.  We’ve worked extra hard with our teams to complete urgent projects, sat next to each other at All-PCHer conferences and mingled over morning coffee in the dining room.

Here at PCH we share a common goal, which is to please YOU – our fans and customers!  Our founders set the tone that customer satisfaction should be 100% guaranteed.  So, delighting our customers is also part of our roots!  We enjoy working together to bring you fun, new play and win opportunities and the kind of good quality, value priced merchandise you like – backed by our Free Inspection Privilege and No Hassle, Money-Back Guarantee.  We do this because we like to think of you, too, as part of our PCH family, and we’re happy to have you in our family business!

Deborah Holland PCH

Sincerely,

Deborah Holland

Is it a coincidence that PCH got its’ start in the year and month of my birth? I think not.

I am a Scorpio and also the Chinese Year of the Snake (1953). I am told these two signs mean that I am Intelligent, Quick to learn, and quick with a wittisisam as well, a brilliant quip at that. I am flattered that my two signs tend to beauty. My husbnd says I am a beautiful person anyway.

I Joined the PCH FAMILY as a consumer in the Month of October, 1971. I’ll never forget receiving my first PCH letter; addressed to me (or current occupent) and have remained a dedicated consumer ever since then.

I was 18, just having opened my own business, and wanted to win the PCH AWARD more than you can imagine.
I sent in everyone of my entries, and soon I had more magazine subscriptions than four medical clinics put together. It took me a while to learn that I did not have to order to enter.
However, I AM STILL WAITING for the REALLY BIG WIN to HAPPEN for ME and my family.
It may never happen, but in the meantime I am made to feel somewhat content with the Movie Tickets winnings from PCH SearchndWN and ALL of the E-GIFT CERTIFICATES I have won at SHOPandWIN; which saved me a bundle on those items I absolutely had a reason to purchase. I have updated my bathroom with my NEW GOLD COAST TOWEL SETS (I do this every spring); I have put clean white fluffy and Luxurious Pillows on our bed. I had not switched our pilliows for about five years so it was way past time to do this, AND SUCH A DEAL I Got TOO!!!! I Bought Four of the JUMBO pillows. It seems my PCH SHOPandWIN Family members knew exactly what to stock for my every household, jewelry (for me and my daughter), and gifts that fit the bill just perfectly for last Christmas, and I have even purchased a good deal of this years Christmas Presents already too ! I have family members that collect coins, watches, videos and books. I have told them all about shopandwin.com and in the meantime I have already purchased gift items for them. My husband is also a pocket watch collector, and I have my eye on a beauty that Shopandwin is carrying from the Franklin Mint. I look everyday to see if it is the Deal of the Day yet.
I have been made further content having won REAL PCH CHECKS for odd amounts like $75. $5. and I am waiting to receive another in the amount of $30. Hey, a winning is a winning.
I am also an active Family and Friends Member at PCHgames.com my screen name is dislocatedcajun . The dislocated has three meanings.
1) I am a cajun by birth and family line of French Canadians that moved to Louisiana to settle.
2) I have been made to move over 1200 miles away from my HOME in Lousisana and
3) My bones have been dislocataed by the fall I experienced in 2004 and that has interferred with my once very active life.
However, Back to my PCH FAMILY

I have a goood time playing and have even had the opportunity to kind-of get to know players that play the same time that I do; on some of the same games.
When I am in a down mood and want (need) to win I play Backgammon becasue I NEVER LOSE. I am pretty good at strategy games.

I have tried a couple of the Cash Paying Tournaments, and have not had good luck there. On the other hand I have won two trophies with the highest score in backgammon and one for the MOST TOKENS WON playing Backgammon.

Anyway, you can see how PCH has become a part of my daily family life. I have come to know You Deb, and Maureen and Gail, Lisa, Michael, Norma and many others whose blog responses I do read everyday.

PCH has become much more than an online retail outlet, they bhave become personally involved with their customers, so much so that they learn quite a lot about them. I LIKE THIS.

I really had to Laugh when reading about How PCH began in 1953. The house my husband & me are renting now was built in 1953, and is known in the neighborhood as the Old Boat & Bait House. Apparently an elderly man lived here & stored people’s boat’s (the side of the house is a fairly good size Lot) & sold Bait. I’ve told my husband it would be cool to get a beat up used sm.boat or canoe w/old wooden paddles to put in the front yard & re-open a bait shop, but of course this takes money. The Lake we live on is being sold by the City for $200.00 cause the damn and Maintenance is so Costly & the neighbors living around it Honestly need to be fined, for there share in pollution to the water. It’s sad, because nobody seems to care, & we cant even Eat the Fish in the Lake. This community has Outstanding Potential, but nobody has the money to rebuild it back the way it was when the elderly man lived here. I always wonder what happen to him?
Anyway’s its nice to be able to go on-line & view pch employee’s pictures & here there stories, and the History which I identified 1953 too Lol..My husband & my son tell me I’m infatuated with pch, and they don’t think I just fell out of a rocking chair, but when doing so Landed backwards upside down on my head. Oh well we’ll see who gets the Last Laugh that’s mean, but there no support either! But of course Like everyone else in the family would want to become your Best Friend if you won…It’s like the Lord says, “we reap what we sow”, and “Love your neighbor’s as you Love Yourself”..It also says “Money is the Root of all Evil”, well in some of the stories I read over this past week got me thinking what really would I do with a Large amount of Money? A couple stories mentioned taking 10 million & dividing it to 1 million for 10 people to share, and had to ask myself if they got a Knock at there door would they Really do just that? It makes a person wonder! Well enjoy your day, and an even Better Week-end to All!!!Love, rina

Yes, it will be fun to win the $1 Million Dollar Sweepstakes but I think that it would be fun also to work with a “bunch” of Happy People as a Family. You can tell that everyone is happy by the way they smile and have that peace and relaxation about them. Keep up the fantastic job that you all are doing. I still would like to win the “Big One”.

Your multiple mailings are so confusing and misleading…I don’t know which drawing I’m entered in correctly and timely. I’ve been participating and buying since the late 60′s and have won nothing…and paid inflated shipping fees. It is time to get off this merry-go-round.
