Growing Up with Publishers Clearing House!

PCH offers consumers value, variety and convenience! Always has. Always will. And, we’ve been doing that, so far, for 58 years! Wow. Can you believe it? That means entire generations have grown up with Publishers Clearing House – from “boomers” to “millennials.” I don’t think there’s anyone out there who hasn’t heard of PCH in some form or another. Actually if you think about it, there are many of us who have never known a world without Publishers Clearing House in it.

I remember when I was a kid, my sister and I would take the magazine stickers out of the direct mailers our parents received and stick them on the wall – and, yes, we got into really big trouble for that! I also remember seeing the SuperPrize millionaires on television – always imagining what it would be like to win. And, like so many other people over the years, I became a “fan” of Publishers Clearing House – ordering magazines and entering sweepstakes. Okay, I hear you! The answer is NO – you never have to order or buy anything in order to possibly win a PCH sweepstakes, contest or giveaway. Although there are many out there who think that the odds of winning go up with a purchase –they don’t. And, since I always loved magazines, as so many of us do, I always figured it was a great deal to order with PCH anyway because of the low subscription prices and the possibility of becoming a millionaire. Sounded great to me!

As times changed and technology advanced, Publishers Clearing House “grew up,” too. Today, PCH has evolved into a business focused predominantly on merchandise as a response in the mid-1980s to the changes in consumers buying habits. In 1999, the pch.com website was launched, providing online access to Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes entries, additional prize winning opportunities and exciting value deals on merchandise and, yes, magazines! Our family of “play and win” properties, including pchlotto.com, pchgames.com, pchtv.com and pchsearchandwin.com, were developed in 2007/2008. And, of course, we have our Fan page on Facebook. Stop by anytime!

Although I’ll always have a place in my heart for those stickers – and on the wall – ha ha! – I must admit PCH has been a great “friend” to grow up with. Take a look below at the very first direct mail package sent to consumers in January 1959! Do you remember it? Did you receive it? Let us know!  And, please tell us of your memories growing up with Publishers Clearing House. Feel free to leave your comments below and maybe we’ll use them in a future PCHblog post.

Until next time…

I understand what it means not to have the funds. For me i’m a single mom who’s out of work, going to school for my Medical assistance degree I would love to be able to pay all these student loans off by the time I graduate in Dec. 2012. I would love to have two nickles to rub together, but I dont. So I’m praying that I will end up being the winner, because that will help me have a better life, as well as my son. If I did win I could pay it forward also to others who are going through the same thing I’m going through. But I know that every thing happens for a reason, and if “God” blesses me with this wonderful gift I will help others as well.

Even though I have no actual memories growing up with pch (since I’m just 18), I do remember when I first saw it on TV. At first I thought it was a scam but now I see that people actually win in which I was excited. So I put in an entry everyday but no luck. I know this time, I’m going to win though because I’m much wiser now and I’m going to use this money to pay off the bills I have to pay now. I would also be able to help out my family which will best feeling next to winning PCH!

I remember my Grandmother buying PCH magazine subscriptions and having them sent to my brother, sisters and myself as Christmas gifts. She would buy a magazine subscription from PCH for my mom on her birthday.
Then us children would save up money and give it to my mom so she could buy my Grandmother a PCH magazine subscription.
Our Grandmother was a school teacher so she thought it was very important for children to read.
I believe we all looked forward to the various magazines coming each month in the mail.
To me, it always felt like another little present had arrived from our Grandmother who we only saw once a year in the summer for a few days.

To add to my comment earlier I do remember when I was about 15 or 16 I was watching TV and I the commercial about pch came up. I asked my grandma (R.I.P) what is PCH. I remember her telling me that Publishing Clearing House since she was a teenager. I was like wow that’s a long time lol. She also had told me that people do win but nobody she had known. So I had went on the computer and typed in pch.com and 5000 a week for life came up. Now I put in my information and everything amd after I kept doing that until one day I was looking at the rules and it had said “You must be 18 to be eligible to win” I was like what! So that’s probably why I haven’t won yet lol after I found that out I just put my grandma name in the entry since I was trying to win it for her anyway. Lol yea..those were good times for me

I can remember as far back a the 70′s… getting the mailings and sending them all in… Then, PCH advanced by way of computerizing their entries… that was great for me… so, I started doing that too… and, who can forget the commercials… well I’ve watch nearly all of them… you can say I’m not your biggest fan… I blog/chat… I play the games… lotto… answer the questions… surveys… everything… After spending a lot of time job searching…(been out over a year) PCH is my stress re-leaser… big time!! Thanks a million or 10-million or $5000.00 a week for LIFE!!!! :)

I was dreaming (day dreaming) that I was working at my job at Gulfstream (I am a youth apprentice which mean I don’t get paid much lol but good enough if I didn’t have to get an apartment and all)doing my work and everything and all of a sudden I saw Dave and the PCh gang with balloons and a check for $5000 a week for life! Dave had said “Is someone name Parish Mack here?” I said “That’s me! That’s me!I was sooo excited! I kind of got emotional too because winning something as big as this, it would help me and my family out a whole lot, especially when I have to get my apartment this month coming and have to come up with the rent and utilities (I got it for that month
but the next month its going to be hard and plus I’m going to have to get a bed and tv).I can help my mom, dad, and aunt out especially because he wants to get his business up and going, I want to help my mom out with some of her bills or if she need spending money, and my aunt because even when I messed up she still treated me the same so I really want to help her out.I just kept saying thank you jesus! and thank you guys from pch! I have a feeling though that my day dream will become a reality! When I win I probably would cry out of joy because I wouldn’t have to worry about the bills Imma have to pay when I get my apartment next month. I already have to pay this bill of 483 but thank god imma have that paid by next Friday. I just know when I win everything will get better. Again I am Parish Mack and I’m 18 ( turned 18 about 4 months ago) and I live in Savannah GA #representing
Thank you guys from pch for letting us (esp me) have this oppurtunity at a chance to win 5000 a week for life!I hope and pray that I win publishing clearing house $5000 a week for life. I’m from Savannah Ga and I’m 18 years old. I am going to have a lot of future financial problems. After my grandma died things haven’t been the same. I went to go stay with my dad and it didn’t work out too much, so I went to go stay with my aunt, and then I had to go back to my dad, and stay with my step mom (which I didn’t wanted to but had no choice at the time because I got in trouble with my dad) in which she put my name on the bills which could mess up my credit (again I had no choice since I had got in trouble). When summer finally came I had finally stayed with my real mom but I only can stay there for the summer because I’m not on the lease. So now I’m trying to save up for an apartment (had to get the bills out of my name and I’m left with a 438 bill) with the job I had got and I probably have it by the end of july. I already know its going to be hard on me financially though. I don’t even have a car yet I’m just taking the bus (but I’m not concerned about that because you got to do what u got to do ecspecially if I want to keep this job). I just pray that something great happens such as winning this pch 5000 a week for life it will not only help me it would also help my family out. Maybe then, everything would be ok. I know this is very personal but I had to share that with you guys. Thanks and God Bless.

I read that pch has only been open for 30 – 35 years! It’s been longer?

    Hi Maureen,

Yes, it has been longer than 35 years! Publishers Clearing House was founded in 1953 by Harold and LuEsther Mertz and their daughter, Joyce Mertz-Gilmore. In 1967 the company launched a sweepstakes to draw attention to its magazine deals.

    Regards,
    Rod @ PCH

I remember growing up watching my mother apply to the publisher Clearing House all the time when I was growing up. She was always buying something from them, but never won anything. So now she sees me doing the same thing she was and she wants me to stop, because she said I will never win. But I told her that you never know I could be that lucky person they might pick. So I’m going to keep on trying.
