Celebrate National Cyber Security Awareness Month by following these easy internet safety steps to be safe online.

Celebrate National Cyber Security Awareness Month by following these easy internet safety steps!

October is known for a lot of things…pumpkin-picking, apple pie baking, and trick-or-treating, just to name a few. But for all of us avid internet users, October should really be known for something far more critical – cyber security.

What’s that, you ask? Cyber security is all about practicing safe security techniques online to protect yourself, your family, your community and your country. In this increasingly digital society, internet safety is ever-important. That’s why the United States has been observing National Cyber Security Awareness Month every October since 2004. This annual awareness-raising campaign encourages every internet user to protect their networks and be safe online.

You see, the internet is a shared resource, and securing it is our shared responsibility. That’s why each one of us needs to do our part! What can you do to be safe online? It’s easy! Follow these few internet safety steps from the National Cyber Security Division and The National Cyber Security Alliance, sponsors of National Cyber Security Awareness Month.

  1. UPDATE: Remember to always update your browser (Firefox, Chrome, etc.).  Newer browsers offer you better protection against viruses and other online threats. Publishers Clearing House prepared an easy-to-use browser update web page containing links to all the major browsers to help you get the latest version of your browser of choice.  Click here for the link.
  2. STOP: Before using the Internet, stop to understand the risks and learn how to avoid potential problems.
  3. THINK: Take a moment to be certain the path ahead is clear. Watch for warning signs and think about how your actions online could impact your safety. Before entering credit card or social security number on any site, make sure the site is save. There are a few simple things to look for to help:
  4. CONNECT: Enjoy connecting over the Internet, knowing you’ve taken the right steps to safeguard yourself and your computer.

By following these easy internet safety steps, you’ll not only be making the internet more secure for yourself, but for everyone!

As for Publishers Clearing House, we’ll be doing our part all month – and all year – long to make sure your information is always safe and secure at PCH.  You can rest assured that when connecting with PCH online internet safety is a top priority for us.

So from all of us at Publishers Clearing House – Happy National Cyber Security Awareness Month! Remember to Stop, Think and Connect, and always be safe online.
