Giving Back – A Wonderful PCH Tradition Continues

st-jude-delivery

Publishers Clearing House was thrilled once again on November 4 to visit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® and donate the results of another PCH Giveback to this magnificent organization. Two Big Checks (like those handed to sweepstakes winners on TV) totaling $150,000 were presented to Steele and Kelly at the Memphis, TN, headquarters. A giant greeting card expressing the love and support of hundreds of PCH employees was also presented.

This ceremony occurred one day after the PCH Prize Patrol awarded a $10,000 sweepstakes prize to a nearby Memphis resident, 20-year-old Teaira Haney.  In a heartwarming coincidence Teaira announced – with absolutely no knowledge of PCH’s plans for the next day – that the first thing she would do with some prize money was “give back” to St. Jude – in gratitude for the effective cancer treatment her five-year-old sister received earlier at the world-renowned research hospital.

Of course such a moving story is not unusual at a place named after St. Jude, the patron saint of hopeless causes.  Founded in 1962 by TV legend Danny Thomas, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

After the presentation, Prize Patrol’ers Howie and yours truly were given a tour of the St. Jude facility.  We saw again how every member of the staff is always smiling and working hard to make the young patients’ hospitalizations as warm and comfortable as possible.  Truly significant and a welcome benefit for the patients’ families is that they never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.

Back in 1962 the overall survival rate for a child with cancer was 20 percent. Now, through the dedication of the hospital’s researchers, the survival rate is 80 percent. Not yet satisfied, St. Jude has set a goal of increasing the overall childhood cancer survival rate to 90 percent. They won’t stop until no child dies from cancer.

All of us at Publishers Clearing House have been humbly honored to have such an internationally recognized institution as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® receive Giveback support – for the fifth year in a row, all made possible by YOUR Giveback participation.  To one and all, our sincere thanks.
