Win a Home Improvement Sweepstakes to Get Winter-Ready

After the long, hot summer we endured this year, it is almost hard to imagine that winter is here, but it is. And, that means time is running out for you to get your home ready for the colder weather.

This year, wouldn’t it be nice to give your home the improvements it needs to keep you safe and warm throughout winter? By entering the Publishers Clearing House $100,000 Cash to the Rescue Sweepstakes, that’s exactly what can happen because you’ll have an extra $100,000 to put toward your home remodeling project. It’s like winning your own home improvement sweepstakes!

Of course, until that time, here are a few things you should be planning on doing around the house to help winterize your home before the ice-cold temperatures hit (if they haven’t already in your area!).

Plumbing To-Dos

Before the temperatures drop below freezing, you will want to disconnect any hoses from your outdoor faucets, drain them of water, and put them away for the season. You should also have any underground sprinkler systems drained and blown out. Inside, you should look for any exposed plumbing pipes in your basement and if you find any, apply heat tape to them to help prevent them from freezing. Give everybody in the home a refresher course on where the home’s main water valve is so if a pipe does break, whomever is home at the time can quickly shut the water off to keep the damage to a minimum.

Keep Drafts at Bay

Air leaks quickly leach the warm air from inside a home in the winter. So, look all around your home for any areas where air might be escaping and seal them up using caulk, weather-stripping, or spray foam insulation. If you have outlets installed on exterior walls, remove the outlet covers and install insulated gaskets between the outlets and their covers.

Ready the Chimney

A roaring fire is a delight on a cold winter’s night. But, if the chimney isn’t cared for properly, it can be a disaster. Before you use your fireplace this winter, have your chimney professionally inspected and cleaned. Your fireplace should also have a working damper on it so when the fireplace is not in use, you can close the damper to keep the warm air from escaping up the chimney.

Prep the HVAC

After running your air conditioning all summer long, your system won’t be getting much of a break because the cold weather will soon be calling for your heat to kick on. But, before that happens, have your HVAC system inspected and your ductwork cleaned. Replace the air filter on your HVAC system so it starts off the winter season as efficient as possible.

Reverse the Blade Direction on Your Ceiling Fans

Did you know that one of the best things you can do to help lower your heating bills this winter is to change the direction of your ceiling fan blades? It’s true. In winter, the blades should be rotating clockwise because this direction pulls the warm air sitting near the ceiling down where it can be dispersed throughout the room.
