A “Knock Knock” that’s No Joke

Ever since we were kids we’ve all heard Knock Knock jokes.  Over the years I’ve no doubt heard a hundred or more.  But an online check indicates there are thousands of them: “K-K” jokes for kids (including infantile ones), “K-K” jokes that are pitifully corny, “K-K” jokes that are adult and sophisticated, and “K-K” jokes that are risqué.  I’m sure you know a few, so you don’t need to hear any examples from me.

But there is one “Knock Knock” that is no joke.  Yes sir: the “K-K” I’m talking about won’t produce groans (from corniness), a giggle (from cleverness) or a “Phew” (from naughtiness).   It’s the “Knock-Knock” that immediately precedes a Publishers Clearing House winning moment.  When the door is opened and a brand new PCH Sweepstakes winner sees the Prize Patrol standing there — with roses, balloons and a Big Check — there will be screams, weak knees, tears or maybe just a stunned silence.  This is no April Fools Day joke.  It’s the real thing – recorded time and again on videotape for all of America to see on TV.

I’m always amazed that many people I meet don’t believe that “real people” really win the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes.  I assure them that the PCH winners seen on TV are absolutely real, that they are not actors, that they are not notified in advance, and that the prize deliveries are neither staged nor rehearsed.  What you see in our TV commercials are the actual winning moments – no exceptions!

“What if the winner isn’t home?” some people ask.  It’s true that winners can be off doing chores (shopping or at the doctor’s) or on vacation or at work; but we find them – without ruining the surprise of the winning moment.  That’s why you will sometimes see the Prize Patrol shocking a winner on the job – as co-workers look on in amazement and then break into applause.

Customer Appreciation Prize Turns Winter to a Wonderland

PCH Customer Appreciation prize award makes Chicago suburbanite feel like she’s in a Winter Wonderland!

While spring is in the air already in some parts of the country, the chill of winter still lingers in other areas.  That reminds me of a frosty day in January when the Midwest got a real taste of winter with the arrival of a giant snow storm – fueled by Canadian winds and chills.  Motorists in Chicago grumbled over the treacherous driving conditions as snow covered the roadways.  Shop owners decided to close early – except those merchants who sold snow shovels and salt.

But for Cheryl Runnels, who resides in a Chicago suburb close to the Wisconsin border, it was a Winter Wonderland.  Why?  Because the Publishers Clearing House Prize Patrol, accustomed to the harshest of foul weather challenges, arrived at her door  with roses, balloons and a Big Check: for $100,000.00 as the winner of a PCH Customer Appreciation Prize!  Now that would warm up even an igloo in the North Pole!

Positive Thinking: A Prize Patroler’s Philosophy

Positive thinking can be a good philosophy for life … here’s why.

If you’ve been following our PCH Blog for some time, you may recall that I play the piano.  In a few weeks I’ll be performing in a cabaret charity benefit.  I’m still putting my program together, but am seriously considering including a medley that reflects the “positive thinking” I try to bring to life in general as well as to all the wanna-be-winners out there.  It starts with that “old chestnut” of a song, “Look for The Silver Lining” and concludes with an advertising jingle that gained familiarity some years ago: “Miracles can happen, can happen for you: Publishers Clearing House, the house where dreams come true.”  When those words are sung there are always laughs and cheers – not only from those in the audience who know that I’m the long-time head of the PCH Prize Patrol but from those who don’t know and would really love to win!

Even if you don’t live near me, I’d like you to pretend that you’ll be at this cabaret – which should be a lot of fun — and take the lyrics to heart:  “Look for the silver lining” and “Miracles can happen.”  Then “think positively” and enter the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes – without delay.

A Rose Bouquet “How Sweet It Is” – Like Winning at PCH

I realized many of our PCH Blog readers might like to hear how our rose bouquet tradition got started when I saw some of your comments in response to Amanda’s February 17^th PCH Blog post.  (Yes, I do read them!)

When we first started delivering Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes prizes directly to winners’ doors in 1988, we routinely brought along flowers and balloons to add colorful accents to the videotaped winning moments.  Minutes before the actual presentations we’d stop at a local florist and pick up whatever flowers were on hand, generally a mixed bouquet of carnations, daisies, or wild flowers.  “Wrap ‘em up!” we’d say, then speed away in the Prize Patrol van to make a surprise award.  Of course our PCH winner was flabbergasted by our visit, especially The Big Check.  The flowers were gratefully received with a courteous “Aren’t they nice?”

One day a local florist didn’t have any ordinary flowers to give us.  “All we have today is red long-stemmed American Beauty roses,” she said.  “But I’ll give you a special price on a rose bouquet since I won’t have anything else ‘til later today.”

“You’ve got a deal,” we said.  Gina, one of our Prize Patrol’ers, took the bouquet and marched from the store looking as happy as Miss America.  And off we drove to surprise a lucky PCH winner nearby.
