Edwin Presidents' Day

Hello Searchers!

Did you know that Presidents’ Day—that’s right, the third Monday in February that allows most workers and students all across America to enjoy a 3-day weekend—was the very first federal holiday to celebrate the life of an individual American? But do you know who that one American was? Well curious PCH fans, it was established in recognition of our very first President, George Washington.

Presidents' Day

In fact, PCH searchers, Presidents’ Day was originally known as Washington’s Birthday, celebrated on his actual birth date February 22 well into the 20th Century. Then, in 1968 Congress passed the Monday Holiday Law. One of the conditions of this act changed the observance of Washington’s Birthday from February 22nd to the third Monday in February. Ironically, now the holiday would never be celebrated on Washington’s actual birthday, as the third Monday in February cannot fall any later than February 21! How did I learn all this?
