Finding All Things Presidential At PCHSearch&Win!

Edwin Presidents' Day

Hello Searchers!

Did you know that Presidents’ Day—that’s right, the third Monday in February that allows most workers and students all across America to enjoy a 3-day weekend—was the very first federal holiday to celebrate the life of an individual American? But do you know who that one American was? Well curious PCH fans, it was established in recognition of our very first President, George Washington.

Presidents' Day

In fact, PCH searchers, Presidents’ Day was originally known as Washington’s Birthday, celebrated on his actual birth date February 22 well into the 20th Century. Then, in 1968 Congress passed the Monday Holiday Law. One of the conditions of this act changed the observance of Washington’s Birthday from February 22nd to the third Monday in February. Ironically, now the holiday would never be celebrated on Washington’s actual birthday, as the third Monday in February cannot fall any later than February 21! How did I learn all this? Well I went straight to PCHSearch&Win and simply typed in “curious about Presidents’ Day”. Wow! Just for starters, I learned more fascinating facts like this…

• Each of our 50 states calls the shots to decide how to celebrate Presidents’ Day and even what to call it!

• Alabama celebrates Washington and Jefferson Day, named for Thomas Jefferson, our nation’s third President.

• Massachusetts celebrates Washington Day in February. It also celebrates Presidents’ Day to honor the Presidents who came from New England.

• The state of Virginia, Washington’s home state, celebrates George Washington Day.

Presidents’ Day traditions vary from state to state. What traditions does your state celebrate? Find out at PCHSearch&Win! George Washington was sworn in to be the first American President of the United States on Wall Street in front of Federal Hall April 30th 1789.
Plus,The Mount Washington Glass Works which was founded by Deming Jarvis in South Boston during The 1800s, was so named in Honor of our first president. You may asked yourself why is this important for me to know? Well, if you have ever drank or owned any glassware made by Libbey, then you might find it interesting to know that William Libbey father of Edmond Libbey started working at The Mt. Washington Glass Works in 1851 as an accountant and later would buy the factory thus laying down the foundation on which his son Edmond would later build into a legacy known as Libbey Glass Company! :-))
