Happy Homecoming from the Hospital

When the Prize Patrol knocks on the door of a Publishers Clearing House winner and no one answers, we usually hang around as long as necessary to capture the sweepstakes winning moment on videotape. But on our recent Prize Patrol Blitz, we had so many deliveries to make (101 across the USA in the space of a few days!), we had to “keep on truckin” -- as they say.

Faith Brooks of Florida wasn’t home to accept the balloons, roses, Champagne and The Big Check. According to neighbors, she’d left at dawn to take her husband to a hospital for elective surgery. Unbeknownst to us, the neighbors then called Faith on her cell phone, found out that the surgery had gone well, and told her about the excitement at home. With the “beans spilled” – so to speak, I called Faith back, confirmed the good news and received her assurance that all the goodies in the Prize Patrol van could be safely left with her friends.

When Faith’s husband came out of his anesthesia, she told him that she was a winner in the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes. But in his groggy state he didn’t remember it the next day. Nonetheless, she happily found everything as promised when she got home – including the real check which she promptly took to the bank.

“It really does happen!” the amazed bank teller cried as Faith showed her a $1,000.00 check from Publishers Clearing House.

With Faith’s husband now doing fine, an “expenses paid” vacation to visit children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren is now on the Brooks’ calendar for the summer.

“If I had known you were coming, I would have put my teeth in!”

Being a Prize Patrol deputy for the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes is one of those jobs where you’re bound to get a ton of questions. “Do you really give away all that money?” “Tell me…what’s the catch?” And one of my personal favorites, “Will you please knock on my door next?”

But the question that amazes me the most is “Do you tell the Publishers Clearing House winners you’re coming ahead of time?” You’d think after seeing the Prize Patrol surprise so many cash sweepstakes prize winners online and on national TV, people would realize it’s not staged. The truth is we never tell our contest winners we’re coming. If we did, we wouldn’t get such amazing and genuine reactions in our famous sweepstakes winning moments. Just think of the time the Prize Patrol surprised a contest giveaway winner whose daughter opened the door wearing nothing but a towel!

Melody and her husband Brad run a financial services business out of their home. So it’s no surprise that they are on the computer a lot of the time and often use an online search engine. The PCH Search & Win site is made for people like them – and you!

On a recent workday morning, Melody looked out the window, saw the Prize Patrol van, the roses and the balloons, and could hardly believe her eyes. But there we were: with a Big Check for a cash sweepstakes prize of $7,000.00.

Better Than a Casino or a Lottery

On at least two occasions, playing the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes was a heck of a lot more profitable than playing slots and gaming tables at a gambling casino: Al S. won a $10 Million SuperPrize while Charil N. won $100,000 cash in our prize drawing – still not bad, right? The Prize Patrol is Like a Tourist Attraction

The Publishers Clearing House Prize Patrol was in Washington, DC not so long ago awarding a prize – $7,000.00 to a shocked and happy Eric Murray who entered the sweepstakes through PCH Search & Win at http://search.pch.com/.

I was reminded of the many places we’ve visited like Washington DC that are tourist attractions: Mount Rushmore, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Disneyland, Las Vegas, and the Mall of America (Minneapolis’ biggest tourist draw) to name a few.

At such places, folks are milling about, taking in the sights, looking for something memorable, shooting photos for those back home. Suddenly they see our Prize Patrol van appear out of the blue just as seen on TV. Wow! Some of them must think the PCH Prize Patrol is much more exciting than a stone monument because they stop snapping pictures of buildings and statues and come running.

“Here I am!” “You found me!” “Oh please! Give me the Big Check!” they cry as they gather round us, hoping we have some big cash sweepstakes prize for them.

‘We just awarded a prize to a Publishers Clearing House winner – not far from here,” we announce. They are happy to meet the PCH Prize Patrol in person and see for themselves that we are real.

“We sure will,” they say, “especially now that we know you are real. I’ve seen you on TV but wasn’t sure I could believe it. Well, I believe it now!”

Now that Spring is here, we members of the PCH Prize Patrol are reminded that hot temperatures are on the way. I recall three very hot August days in Florida, some record-breaking temperatures on California’s Mojave Desert, and a scorching afternoon in Iowa – just to name a few. Literally Speechless

When I recently surprised Miami, Florida’s Madeline Larson, one of our Prize Patrol Blitz winners, with a Big Check, her eyes widened and a huge smile came over her face. She opened her mouth to speak and I expected a torrent of words; but no sound came out. Then I realized that she had had a tracheotomy and that whatever she wanted to say would be done without speaking in the conventional sense. Still, there was no containing her joy. Madeline expressed her surprise, amazement and gratitude with tears welling in her eyes, hands dancing and arms embracing me and my PCH Prize Patrol partner.

What a thrill that was!

Mrs. Larson has been entering our contests and sweepstakes for years with the persistence and positive attitude she has brought to her various health challenges. Congratulations Madeline!

While the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes TV commercials and sweepstakes winning moments as seen on TV and at pchtv.com are filled with ecstatically verbal Publishers Clearing House winners, I am reminded that facial expressions and physical reactions are powerful communicators too; they demonstrate to TV viewers the emotional response to winning just as much as actual words do – maybe even more so. Sure, the dream sweepstakes winners may shout “Oh my God!” or “Hallelujah!” – but you get a sense of how dramatically they are affected when the lips quiver or they jump up and down or their legs wobble or they fall to the ground.

We Prize Patrol veterans have heard and seen it all.

Making Believers Out of Florists

I’ve just returned from presenting five Prize Patrol Blitz awards to lucky prize drawing winners who were mighty glad that they had entered the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes. My team was one of 31 teams of PCH staffers who traveled from coast to coast delivering 101 “economic relief packages” of $1,000 each to grateful dream sweepstakes winners.

In every town we visited we had to buy a big bouquet of red roses – to add to the collection of stuff we give each Publishers Clearing House winner to make their sweepstakes winning moment a dream come true: balloons, Champagne, and -- ta dahh! – The Big Check. I am not exaggerating when I tell you that the employees at each flower shop were as shocked and surprised to see the Prize Patrol “live and in person” as the winners were.

“Are you serious?” one head florist cried as she saw my Prize Patrol blazer. “Some one in our little town won? I never thought that was ‘for real.’ Sure, I’ve seen it on TV, but I never dreamed I’d see it here!”

Other flower shop employees hearing the excitement rushed from the back room. “Oh my God!” one exclaimed. “Who’s the Publishers Clearing House winner?” another one asked. “Why not save time and just give it to me?” asked another. The florist’s delivery man ran in and said, “I’ve just seen the Prize Patrol van out there in our parking lot and darn near fainted!”

Of course we don’t tell the florists who the winners are; word could leak out and ruin the surprise, especially in a small town.

Recently as we hosted Doris Gray, our newest Publishers Clearing House winner, at a gala all-employee ceremony and luncheon, I couldn’t help but think, What if Doris had not entered the contest?
