If there is a near-universal verbal reaction to a surprise visit from the PCH Prize Patrol it would have to be “Oh my …!” It seems like many Publishers Clearing House winners utter those words as they open their doors and see us standing there -- with giant bouquets of balloons and roses and (ta dah!) the Big Check! For these winners of the PCH Sweepstakes, there’s no question that this is “the real thing” -- because they have seen sweepstakes winning moments in our TV commercials for years; they recognize our smiling faces; they note our official blue blazers with PCH Prize Patrol insignia; they see our cameraman and local reporters standing there and know for sure that this is no hoax.

Another common reaction of our cash sweepstakes winners is, “I don’t believe this!” or “Are you kidding me?” They have dreamed for years about a PCH winning moment occurring on their doorsteps, but they doubted that it would ever happen to them personally.

Some Publishers Clearing House winners say nothing. They are too stunned to utter a single word and stare mutely at us and the videocamera.

A few say something that would not be suitable in a TV commercial – either because it’s an expletive that would offend many viewers or because it’s an expression that has a clear meaning only to natives of that locale. For instance:

• A man in Arkansas said, “Holy !#*!@&#!!!” – and that wound up on the cutting room floor.

• A man in rural Texas exclaimed, “Well shut up!” When he said this in response to our Big Check presentation, we thought he sounded ungrateful; so we nixed it as a TV sound-bite. (Later we learned that it’s a common expression in those parts – meaning something akin to “Well I’ll be darned.” Still, we didn’t want to put a sub-title in our commercial.)

• A Massachusetts woman said repeatedly, “No sir; no sir!” We thought that sounded like she was refusing our Million Dollar SuperPrize generosity. Instead we used a dramatic shot of her falling in tears to the ground.

• Sometimes our contests offer bonus prizes to contest giveaway winners if they say an instructed line when the PCH Prize Patrol arrives, for instance: “Now I know it’s real!!” That’s a winning exclamation and an effective TV sound-bite to motivate the remaining skeptics out there.

Today we focus on a young lady who brings a lot of happiness into people’s lives – Cristina C. of the Publishers Clearing House Contest Department. Cristina works with Maryann Carter and others in the PCH Contest Department to send out many of our big money cash sweepstakes prize awards! Today, Cristina is focusing on making the online contests and sweepstakes of PCH even more exciting. Let’s get to know Cristina – a true, consummate professional!

1. Cristina, what are your job responsibilities at Publishers Clearing House?

I’ve worn several hats since I started at PCH. I’ve been in the Contest Department for almost two years, and I’m “trying on” a new hat within the department. I have just started working within the online games side of PCH, including PCHGames.com, PCHLotto.com and PCH Scratch Cards.

2. How long have you worked at PCH?

I have been at PCH for eight years. I actually started working here on my birthday!

3. What is your favorite part of your job?

The best part has to be the behind the scenes hand I have in awarding free sweepstakes prizes to lucky Publishers Clearing House winners. Knowing I’m helping to potentially change a person’s life, even in a small way, is pretty incredible.

4. What has been your most rewarding moment?

My most rewarding moments are when I receive thank you notes from Publishers Clearing House winners. One I will never forget came from an individual whose home had been burglarized the day before she was surprised in the mail with a contest giveaway prize check from Publishers Clearing House. It meant a lot to her.

5. What was your “wackiest” PCH Prize Patrol moment?

Last summer, on my way to surprise a Publishers Clearing House winner with a $10,000 cash sweepstakes prize, the sky began darkening and all of a sudden my Prize Patrol partner and I got caught in a tornado watch! Fortunately the warning expired and we arrived safely at our destination, ready to make someone’s day with a joyous sweepstakes winning moment.

6. What do you do in your spare time?

I love to cheer on the New York Rangers and New York Mets. I also enjoy spending time with my two cats, Chelsea and Puck.

We stood on the stoop and heard a muffled inquiry from the other side: “Who is it?”

I leaned in and asked, “Are you Teri? Can you step out please?”

“Can I put on a robe?” she responded in a quavering voice.

“Sure!” I said, and within moments the door opened and there stood Teri, ready for her sweepstakes winning moment.

Within an hour a “watchdog” neighbor called our cell phone to advise us, “They’re back!!” We jumped in the Prize Patrol van and were back to the lucky address within minutes – with the roses, the balloons, champagne and – tah–dah! – The Big Check!

Publishers Clearing House is saddened by the passing of Ed McMahon. He was a large personality who entertained generations of TV audiences. Contrary to the belief of many, Ed McMahon never represented Publishers Clearing House or its sweepstakes as a TV spokesperson. He was employed by American Family Publishers, a rival sweepstakes company that ceased operations in 2001.

We extend our condolences to Mr. McMahon's family.

A cash sweepstakes prize winner during our recent PCH Prize Patrol Blitz trip was Katherine Gill, who lives just outside of Jacksonville, FL. With the help of our GPS system we managed to find Katherine’s house with little problem. When we arrived for her PCH surprise free sweepstakes prize award we were greeted by a pleasantly shocked Kathryn and her two little dogs. The excitement of Katherine seemed to extend to her dogs as well as they jumped and scurried all over the place during the PCH sweepstakes winning moment.

After the PCH Prize Patrol presented her with the famous PCH Big Check we asked what she planned on doing with her winnings and she mentioned that the prize money from her winning sweepstakes entry would really come in handy in paying some bills, buying some new tires for her car and hopefully helping out someone else in need. Katherine was especially thankful to win and rather shocked that after playing the PCH sweepstakes she actually won. The shock was even greater when one of the PCH Prize Patrol balloons popped and startled Mrs. Gill so much so that she had to go inside to rest. Between the excitement of winning a dream sweepstakes prize and the startling pop of the balloon busting she was completely worn out, but she couldn’t have been happier.
