What does the second Sunday in May mean to you? It could mean going to PCH.com to enter to win $10 Million dollars! It could mean a nice sunny spring day. Or, it could mean spending the day with your Mom. Why? Because it’s Mother’s Day!

 

As the years have gone by, I’ve grown to realize how lucky one is to have a Mom in their life who loves them and is always there for them no matter what. But, on the other hand, I’ve often wondered about those whose Mom might not have been around much or who had passed away early on. “What do those people do on Mother’s Day?” I often wondered. What I learned was extremely profound and heartfelt.

I remember a time when I was 7 years old and there was an event at school where you had to take your Mother along. My Mom was never one for school events, but this time I thought I’d give it a shot and see if she’d be interested. Well, to my surprise she was. So off we went to school – actually I remember now – it was a sort of early version of a Mommy and Me art class. Anyway, I was so happy my Mom was with me and all the other girls had their Moms with them…except one. She was with her Dad!

That was odd I thought. Why would someone take their Dad to an event where you had to bring your Mom? I asked my Mom about this later and she told me the following:

“A Mother is not always a woman who brought you into the world. A Mom could be any person who is close to you, who raises you, who loves you, who is always there for you and who will always be there for you in good times and bad.”

“Wow! What a concept,” I thought. So, the little girl didn’t have a “physical” Mom in her life anymore. But, her Dad was a Mother to her. I was so profoundly moved by this that to this day, I always hold that thought deep in my heart. 

So, this Mother’s Day celebrate the person who is your Mom! And, if that means your Dad, Aunt, Uncle, Grandmother or anyone else special enough to win the honor of being like a Mom to you, show them how much space they hold in your heart!
