Remembering Our Military Heroes on Memorial Day

Remembering our military heroes is what Memorial Day is about.

Remembering our military heroes is what Memorial Day is about.  This important and meaningful national holiday originated as “Decoration Day” right after the Civil War and has been observed annually ever since on May 30 or on the last Monday of May.  All over the USA there will be ceremonies honoring fallen soldiers, flags flown at half-staff, parades and gatherings where Americans celebrate the freedom for which our comrades in arms have fought.

It is a day, too, that in these modern times is known for the Indy 500, blockbuster movie premieres, the un-official start of summer, fluctuating gas prices and big retailer sales.  Personally, May 30th is significant for me every year because it’s my wedding anniversary.        (I won’t tell you how many years ago that ceremony took place.  Phew, time flies!)

But we at Publishers Clearing House hope that the true significance of this day – remembering our military heroes – will not be shoved aside for these beside-the-point goings-on.

If you click on this link to a song entitled “Thank You Soldiers” performed by a group of school kids, you’ll hear a wonderful tribute to the military men and women who have sacrificed their lives and continue to fight for the cause of freedom. And it’s particularly heartening to hear a new generation of youngsters expressing their patriotic gratitude with such vigor as they are remembering our military heroes.

The PCH Prize Patrol will soon be on the road again, visiting towns across the nation, knocking on doors and making people happy.  These travels — from sea to sea and border to border — will also remind us of what a great country we live in and the selfless men and women whose military service has made it so.

To inspire your own personal tribute to our nation’s military heroes, you can search online to learn more about the origins of Memorial Day and “Decoration Day” or look for other ways to thank soldiers by entering any of these online search terms at PCH Search and Win.

All the best to you and yours,

Dave Sayer

  7. Let us not forget those who were lost and those in harms way every day. Take a minute on this day off to reflect the real reason why you have this day off. GOD bless those who struggle everyday with the scars that their service has bestowed upon them. Thanks to all the families who have endured such heartache supporting their loved ones. We will never forget I know I won’t
