Forever Changed by PCH – Mariam Dvorak’s Winner Story

Hi everyone!  This is Matt K. from PCH Creative.  We’ve all seen the winning moments of our fantastic SuperPrize winners on TV or maybe even on YouTube.  But what happens when the Prize Patrol leaves and the winner is left Forever Changed by PCH with this incredible windfall of serious money?  Over the next several weeks, I’ll be interviewing some of our past winners from years ago and asking them just what DID happen after the Prize Patrol van rolled away!  We’ll find out how they reacted, how their lives were transformed, and what they can do now that they couldn’t have done before.  Let’s start with this week’s surprising and touching profile with Mariam Dvorak from 2004!

Having your life’s dreams and goals come true is something that we all hope for and strive to make happen.  Some of us think it all comes down to what we do – and there’s no denying that the decisions we make do have an effect on our lives!  Others of us think it’s all about luck. In reality, it probably is a bit of both!

For Mariam Dvorak, her combination of action & luck started back in 1978.

“I don’t know where I heard about Publishers Clearing House from, but I just started entering.  I also enjoyed getting the magazines, and then the products.  I still have them all over this house to this day!”

Mariam Dvorak

The daughter of a letter carrier and a faithful entrant through the years, Mariam kept on believing.  “Oh, I was made fun of some, but nothing stopped me!”  Then one day in 2004, luck finally caught up with her.  The Virginian mom and grandmother had a doctor’s appointment and decided to treat herself to a trip to the hair salon afterwards. As fate would have it, Dave Sayer and the Prize Patrol were on their way to her doorstep that very day!  But since Mariam wasn’t home, they had no idea where to look!

Dave and the gang went back to their first stop, the local florist, to try and formulate a plan.  After several unsuccessful attempts to try and figure out Mariam’s whereabouts, the florist finally said, “Look, why don’t you just tell me who it is you’re looking for?  I may know them!”  Well, Dave Sayer and the Prize Patrol could hardly believe it when the florist let out a shout when he heard the name.  “Mariam Dvorak is my SISTER!,” he exclaimed.

With her brother in tow, they made their way back to Mariam’s house.  She had returned from the hair salon (which, as fate would have it, was just two doors down from the florist the entire time!) and was surprised to have a knock on the door almost immediately thereafter – with a life-changing SuperPrize of $1 Million Dollars!!

 winner story

I was very excited!  I just couldn’t believe it was all happening,” she said.  “And everyone in town knew it even before I did!,” she laughs.

Mariam has always looked out for others, and knew right away that she wasn’t going to let one cent of that money go to waste.  In fact, she went so far as to not change the way she lived at all.  She still lives in the same house and still drives the same car, circa 1993!  Mariam immediately invested the money so that she was able to pay for the entirety of her grandchildren’s college tuition.

“Helping them in ways I couldn’t have before, that was what I wanted to do,” she explains.  “Even when an unexpected fourth grandchild came along recently, I was able to set up a trust for their education as well.”

Yes, it was good fortune that gave Mariam her big $1 Million SuperPrize, but it was her actions afterward that were able to make the biggest difference in the lives of her loved ones.  And as she looks fondly on her Big Check (which she still has!), she offers this advice to future entrants:  Be faithful! Keep (at it)! Maybe your day is coming too!”

Hearing a story like Mariam’s is so moving!  Even though it took a while for the Big Check to reach Mariam’s door, obviously fate wanted a good person like her to have it! Tell us what you thought of today’s Forever Changed by PCH story, and be sure to come back next week when we’ll be sharing another incredible winner story!

  1. I would provide college tuition for my granddaughter and youngest son, assist with funding business ventures for my two oldest boys, I would have a special tombstone made for my Mother’s grave who recently passed, I would give money to my oldest brother who took on the majority of arrangement costs when I was able to do nothing at all and my other siblings were able to do what they could. I would help myself by following through on a business venture of my own. There’s no telling who else or what busiess I would surprise and help. When I see a need, I do what I can when I can.

  2. I would first and foremost like to have helped my mother who was the hardest working person that I have ever known. However, I can not do that because she died in 2009 and now lives in HEAVEN. My father lost his job when I was a very young child and my mom worked as a maid at Elmira College for 30+ years. We lived in what others called a shack, the only plumbing in our 4 room home was a pump in the kitchen, we had no inside bath room, we had an out house. Yes, we lived a very poor life! However, I am VERY PROUD OF MY PARENTS…They lived a very modest POOR life. My father was a very proud man, WHO NEVER EVEN THOUGHT OF SIGNING UP FOR PUBLIC ASSISTANCE. Next, Because I am LUCKY to still have my six siblings I would surprise each of them with 10 thousand dollars. Next on my list I would be able to give St. Jude monthly payments for the excellent work they do. When I was 10 or 12 little Bobby Clark died at about 4 or 5 years old of cancer. SINCE I WILL NEVER WIN THE PCH SUPER MEGA PRIZE… None of you will ever know all that we went through to SURVIVE.

  3. I have been praying for my LORD’s GRACE to help me start a new life but that may not be in my future but I do need enough to live on. Continue to pay my bills until I have none and erase all the debt I have unfortunately run up. A dream was put in my heart, that I would be able to live independently and never have to worry about working again. I have worked for a long time but I had a part time job recently and because of illness I had to quit. I found out my director wanted me to write my own reference letter. I explained to her everything that had happened to me that I had been ill for 10 days. I was so surprised but knowing I was not an employee of her’s anymore was a relief to me. My dream is to help all the homeless find homes they can live in. So that I won’t be homeless too. My dream in my heart was placed there by GOD and I can’t lose hope, I can’t lose my hope and faith, If I have no hope how can I go on? I need to move back to Springfield, Va. for a time before I decide what to do. I also need to bury my mother so that she is with her parents. I need to make arrangements for myself. Sounds very depressing but I plan on giving to various needs of the community in various ways. I will give to Animal Groups that need help I know. I just pray I won’t be homeless because then I can’t help anyone. I know this is sad and I don’t mean for it to be but it is a part of life and so I pray for mercy and more faith.

  4. My brothers and I lost our mom… When I was five, little brother was 2, one was 7 and one was 6… Life hasn’t been easy… for us… everything seems to have been a struggle without someone there to encourage us or help us anytime we fall… So, I would get one house, for all of us to share , kids and all… We were closer than most siblings because of our loss… And I have kind of been “the mother.” So we would all have a roof over our head and eachother which is most important of all…. And I would set aside some for my kids first cars, and college tuition… And since my brothers have never seen the ocean.. That is where we’d buy our house. It would be such a blessing after this long hard road…

    1. And I would pay for a good gymnastic school for my Mya Moe, and get surgery for my son Quentin’s hand… He was born missing a bone in one of his hands. AND I would buy an RV, so we could travel around the whole outsiden of the show my brothers and my babies there is a whole nother world for them to explore.

  5. I would help people in places recovering from disasters or suffering from hunger, people who need it most. I think I would also pay for my son’s college tuition if I won. So many possibilities!

  6. I don’t want it all for myself but want to help all the animal groups and veteran groups that there never seems to be enough money for. I’m a veteran myself so know just what the government has taken away fom us.

  7. I would help my two yr old son and myself to survive. My family passed away and we have been struggling trying to make it through each day okay. I would just love to know every night my baby goes to bed with a full belly.
