Publishers Clearing House Money Management Tips

Hello Everyone!

It’s your Friendly Neighborhood Goodwill Ambassador, checking in on the PCH Blog! I know that many of you are looking forward to the next BIG Prize Event, $7,000 A Week For Life! Whenever a big prize is at stake, a lot of people start dreaming of what they would do with the money. I know I did prior to my win!

But what did I do AFTER I received my winnings? Well, some of the things were pretty obvious, like building our dream home. But how did we figure everything out? How did we make our $1,000,000 win last more than a few months? Here’s a little advice and some money management tips from me to you if YOU were to become our next SuperPrize winner!

1)      See a professional. After we won in 2008, we put two members on Team Bostleman. An Accountant and a Financial Advisor. Dealing with a significant windfall at one time can be a bit daunting, but with their knowledge, we were able to set up a game plan.

2)      Settle the debt. Financial freedom comes once the weight of debt is lifted. If you remember, I was working THREE jobs before the Prize Patrol visited me. I was stressed! Getting out from under that debt was a big sigh of relief.

3)      Set aside a little ‘fun money’. OK, game plan in place and debt paid off. Make sure to take a small chunk aside to spend as you would like WITHOUT GUILT. In my case, I upgraded my video gaming platform, took a few small trips and went to my first Madonna concert.

4)      Set a budget. Wait, does that make sense? Why would you set a budget AFTER winning money? Because you want the windfall to keep working for YOU. I was able to plot out my budget through a website. This handy tool tells me if I’m on track to hit my goals, such as saving for retirement and taking a big vacation for our 15th wedding anniversary. Yes, RETIREMENT! Through my budget, I was able to save up to put a large down payment down on my lil’ ‘Smokey’, AND I was able to save up to go on my very first trip over an ocean this coming Spring! I’ll tell you all about it in a future blog, so STAY TUNED!

Do you have your game plan in mind if the Prize Patrol were to come knocking on your door? Let us know in the comments below!

Remember, you can also catch up with me on Facebook at “Natalie Bostleman” and on Twitter @NatalieatPCH.

GOOD LUCK!

Hi Natalie and thanks for the tips. I would definitely find some trustworthy advisors: Susie Orman comes to mind. Plus I know some good real estate people that own a lot of property and since they are personal friends, I would ask their advice. So I would invest in property. I would be making plans to travel… and work out projection planning … :)

Hi! Natalie your advice sounds almost what I’ve planned. I’ve heard many stories of people coming into money, just to end up blowing it. I guess that’s when I started thinking about what I would do if it happened to me. I would sit back and relax first..and then spring into action. It would give me time to think about the budget and not blow it! :)

I think it is smart to get all of your eggs in order before doing something crazy with prize money. I would pay off all debts, and get a trust fund, and just live without worry! What a feeling that would be!!!

Good Morning Natalie on the 18th day of October. I have read your story over and over and I had even watched you on Ricki Lake Show. I have told my family your story and exclaimed how exciting it is to have a true PCH fan just like me and my family and lived so close to us when you won Publishers Clearing House. It is a great feeling knowing PCH can make anyone’s dreams come true no matter where you may live. I wanted to say thank you for more information on what to do if the day comes and PCH Prize Patrol comes knocking on my door with a life changing check. I can’t tell you how many times my husband Brian and I have discussed the what if we really won from Publishers Clearing House? The subject comes up especially now income is tight and holidays are right around the corner. I would love to win not only so we could pay our bills, fix up our vehicles tip top shape, and build our true dream home but to also be able to tell my husband he could take a break from life’s stresses and jump out of the semi truck and enjoy time with his family and not have to worry anymore about making enough to pay all bills and those things that just come up in life. My husband works so extremely hard for every dollar he makes including much time away from home all for his family to make sure to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table. So if we were to ever win from Publishers Clearing House I would definitely take your advice on finding someone to put us on a budget and make the winnings last for many years because I know if not the money would go fast and once its gone it’s gone. Brian and I have discussed on investing and starting our own trucking company or making our own mobile home park if we ever would win so we could be bringing money in to replace some money we spend along the way. I know the money won’t last long unless we put in the effort and due money management. Reading your blog today has shined some light on the subject of money management and has given me more ideas for if that day ever comes and PCH Prize Patrol Elite Team comes knocking on our door with a life changing check. Thank you Natalie for all the information and advice you have given to us PCH Fans. I hope you have a wonderful day! Maybe one day I will have my own PCH winning moment I can share with you. :)

Hi Kimberly –

Great question! I have been lucky enough to travel with Dave, Todd and Danielle a few times. As I live in a different area, we usually all converge on the winner’s state at different times.

They are a blast to hang out with, as I am sure you could imagine. :) Oh and great problem solvers as well when we cannot locate our winner immediately.

Thank you for reading. <3

Yes, I think all the things you said were right on and I am so glad you wrote about all these wonderful tips!!!

I think I would do the same thing if I were to win a SUPER MEGA Prize from PCH and I am so glad it is all working out for you and your husband!!!

I do have a question for you, one of the past bloger’s said that you could not write any thing personal on the blog or any where else on the PCH websites or FB page, is this true? And how personal, like more then your hopes and dreams of winning PCH and what you would do with it all?

Well Ms. Natalie, I do hope you have a wonderful weekend!!!

Yes, I have a game plan if I can get the hubs to go along with it. After tithe and taxes (Federal, State, Other Things) First pay off house and a big bill we have. Second pre-pay for a few years property taxes, propane, lights, and water. Third build on our home another bedroom, bathroom and TV room, in case the in-laws should need to move in with us. That is a very real possibility very soon. Fourth- Maybe have a cellar dug for storage, since we really don’t have that right now. Fifth, a nice new van that would be easy for the in laws to get into and easy to get wheelchair in. Sixth Some much needed landscaping. Seventh an emergency fund. Ninth, get home painted inside and out and get plumber to fix a few things. Get new floor in dinning room and kitchen since ruined by a pipe leak. Eight, fabric so I can make some homemade quilts.
I doubt any money would be left after that. Money only goes so far, even a big win, but would be very grateful for a Million Dollar or more win since doubled as a PCH Facebook Fan. Hoping, but I know it is a random thing. Just hoping my randomness gets picked for the $7,000 a week for life prize or a million dollar prize that gets doubled. Either would truly be an amazing blessing.

yes i know where i would spend my money and how to save some for when i would get older,But first thing i would do would take my kids to disneyland,But let’s get the facts straigt no matter how long a person enters its a slim chance from them ever winning from pch ive been entering for years,I have better chances winning at a casino than i do to in entering at pch just last week i won $500 and got to pay off my bills i only had 20 dollars to play
“TRUE” pch is free to enter but when does someone like myself ever win,or for that matter anyone who entered for years,But when i do win i would have it all planned out in how to save my money!!!

Hi Anna, While we have many draws, there can only be one winner. PCH winners are chosen randomly, but every entry has the same chance of winning!PCH is free, if you don’t play, you won’t have the chance to win! You never know who will become the next BIG winner, so don’t lose hope!
