Happy Prize Patrol Moments From Small Towns!

Prize Patrol Elite Team

People always ask me “What was your favorite ‘winning moment,’ or the funniest, or the weirdest?” Among the hundreds of Prize Patrol trips I’ve made it’s nigh impossible to select one or two stand-out winning moments. I tend to recall the visits that either produced the most dramatic video or the ones when we arrived just in the nick of time to avert a financial disaster looming over the person receiving the Big Check.

I also remember many of the small towns we have visited for winning moments. There‘s something distinctive and heartwarming about communities located well outside major metropolitan areas like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston and Atlanta — as exciting and vibrant as they can be.

The recent passing of actor Andy Griffith reminded me of the many times the PCH Prize Patrol drove into small towns all across the great U.S.A that somehow resembled TV‘s “Mayberry” where Griffith’s character maintained order as Sherriff Andy Taylor. I suppose some people might not consider it a compliment if I likened their community to Mayberry because it was an out-of-the-way, old-fashioned or unsophisticated place. So, even though I could, I won’t specifically name the towns that come to mind. But I thought they were great: the people were super-friendly, the atmosphere was inviting, the air was clean, traffic lights were non-existent, and the towns had — for lack of a better word — character reflected perhaps in the architecture or a village green or memorable shops or unforgettable food.

The Prize Patrol has visited many, many such towns. When we get there residents often say “Well, I never expected to see YOU here. I thought you only went to big cities.”  How they got that idea I don’t know: we travel to all 50 states and to municipalities that have populations of hundreds or millions. So don’t ever think that your chance of winning a Big Check in the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes is in any way influenced by where you live. We go everywhere and anywhere!
