Dave

After many years as one of those “Mad Men” with New York ad agencies, I joined Publishers Clearing House in 1981 as Director of Advertising. Initially I got to know our sweepstakes winners when they were brought to our Port Washington, NY headquarters to collect their prizes. Then, in 1988, Todd Sloane and I started the Prize Patrol, delivering Big Checks in-person to winners’ homes and video-taping their surprise and excitement for our TV commercials. Along the way I was interviewed on countless TV and radio talk shows, spreading the word on the absolute reality of our televised “winning moments.” Now, after more than a thousand winner visits -- awarding over $300 million in prizes, I am less active in PCH’s day-to-day business but still travel from coast to coast as Prize Patrol Ambassador. I never tire of knocking on doors and “knocking the socks off” lucky PCH fans; it's a thrill every single time. When not on PCH duty I'm involved in various community and church activities, play the piano, play bridge, bike, exercise, and walk our two dogs.

Most days it seems like you can’t turn on your TV without being overwhelmed by bad news: murder, mayhem, civil unrest, interstate pile-ups, storms, scandals, natural disasters, international turmoil, financial woes. Yikes!! Well, maybe you should change your viewing habits and discover some good news. Meet Howie, our prize-witness good-news-caster.  Well, some of you […]

Nicholas Kristof, a frequent op-ed columnist for The New York Times (the paper whose motto is “All the news that’s fit to print”), recently wrote about how journalists tend to speak out about war, scandals and disasters.  He himself pleads guilty to overlooking important things happening in the world that are truly good news. I […]

The morning of October 23rd found the PCH Prize Patrol standing outside an apartment in Irving, Texas – just outside Dallas — looking for Desiree Scudder, our newest Million Dollar winner.   But there were two problems: First, no one answered the door despite our increasingly hard knocking.  And second, it was raining cats and […]

After spending many hours on Prize Patrol duty delivering a Big Check or two, Todd, Danielle and I have been known to have a night-cap in the hotel’s lounge – at which time we recount the day’s adventures and plan the next day’s activities.  The conversation inevitably includes some memories of past sweepstakes winners and […]

Turn on your TV and I can promise you that you’ll see commercial after commercial showing a well-dressed person deliriously happy – because he or she used the right deodorant, ate the healthiest breakfast, drank the bubbliest soft drink, took the “approved” cold medicine, wore the sexiest bathing suit, drove the snazziest new car, and […]

It’s amazing what some people are willing to do to win the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes.  Here is a dramatic example: The Prize Patrol is at an airport waiting to board a plane.  It’s clear to passengers standing by that they are on line with the blue-blazered trio they have seen countless times in Publishers […]

“You never know” are words you hear applied in many situations: in the worlds of entertainment, politics, sports, finance, human relations, even weather forecasting. We Prize Patrol’ers “never know” either and have given up trying to predict what will happen when we leave PCH headquarters to deliver a Big Check.  You think that a winner […]

There’s an old saying that “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” I suppose, then, that we should be flattered — that a well-known celebrity has based a new TV show on the idea of surprising people on their doorsteps with big cash prizes.  Similarly, a major car manufacturer has recently run a TV ad […]

August 31st found the PCH Prize Patrol in Lakewood, Colorado looking for Robert Gonzales.  The only trouble was: the address on his Million Dollar winning entry was an empty little house, all locked-up and being fixed-up for a new tenant.  Luckily an excited neighbor, Anita, knew where we could find her “old friend” Robb and […]

We Prize Patrol’ers have busy lives – at the office, at home, on the road – sometimes having two or three prizes to deliver on one trip.  As a result, every hour counts and we have to be ultra-organized. The day before we leave Prize Patrol headquarters, we prepare a timetable covering every step of […]
