PCH’S 60TH Anniversary Prize Goes to Aspiring Filmmaker

Last Updated: June 10, 2013

PCH Anniversary Prize Winner Brandon King

The above headline might suggest that Publishers Clearing House sought to award its special 60th Anniversary Prize in the form of a grant to a promising student of the arts or a champion of the humanities.  Well, that’s a great idea – and one which our founders would have applauded.  However, the $10,000 recipient last Wednesday — like thousands of PCH Sweepstakes winners before him – was chosen randomly from a multitude of anonymous entrant ID numbers.

But that’s where the ordinariness ends; this particular winner is not ordinary.  Brandon King of Seattle has big ambitions.  Confined to a wheelchair for most of his 32 years and living in county-subsidized housing, he has written volumes about things he sees or imagines.  And now, with some prize money in his bank account, Brandon would like to return to school, invest in some camera equipment and a new computer and translate some of his ideas onto video or film.  As you can see, he has a winning attitude.

That explains why Brandon entered the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes every day.  He reasoned that if he took advantage of every opportunity he had to win, he would.  And he did!

While entering and winning came pretty easily to Brandon, the PCH Prize Patrol didn’t have an easy time pulling off the surprise award.  We arrived at his apartment mid-morning and found he wasn’t home.  The property manager and Brandon’s sister (in far-off New Orleans) came to the rescue.  Through a scenario too complicated to describe here, they got him home by mid-afternoon where we waited to shock him – with balloons, roses, champagne, video cameras and — ta-dah — The Big Check for PCH’s 60th Anniversary Prize!  And yes, he was shocked – almost speechless except to keep saying “Wow” and shaking his head in disbelief.  Friends and apartment residents watched the “winning moment” unfold and applauded, saying this was a young man who really deserved the honor.

Now listen up: YOU could become our next winner.  And you don’t have to be an aspiring writer or filmmaker.  But you should aspire to win – and trust that Lady Luck will smile on you.  And you should also follow Brandon’s advice: enter every opportunity you get! The June 30th Mega Prize Event is just around the corner so get your entries in now.

Congratulations Brandon.   And to the rest of you: Don’t forget that PCH gives you lots of chances to “Play and Win” – at pch.com, PCH Search & Win, PCH Lotto, PCH Games and more.  Enter now and good luck!
