Publishers Clearing House Conference Room Brings Back Memories
Why do people love to collect sports memorabilia? Is it because sports collectibles are seen as an investment or do they hold another important value? Just a few days ago, I was taking a tour of Publishers Clearing House and had the privilege of seeing the collection of sports memorabilia that hangs on the walls of Conference Room F. For someone who has a high appreciation for sports and its history, seeing the collectibles was a treat.
As I tip-toed around the room, I felt thrilled and a little awestruck. It was almost as if I was stepping out on the field at Yankee Stadium. I saw a game-used baseball signed by Babe Ruth, an autographed uniform of “The Iron Man” Cal Ripken, a check signed by Jackie Robinson dating back to May 28th 1948 and a painting, depicting the 500 Home Run Club, complete with autographs, including Hall Of Famers Reggie Jackson, Ted Williams and Hank Aaron. In that moment, I wasn’t thinking how much money these objects were worth, but how these classic winning moments, captured over 80 years ago, are still held with such high regard and respect.
I couldn’t help but wonder how Publishers Clearing House got its hands on such treasures. Imagine my surprise when I found out they were gifts from a sports memorabilia company because of all the sports collectibles we offer our bulletin recipients. I then found out that we have an expert who specializes in sports collectibles. She was nice enough to send me a box of baseball cards – being a PCH employee has its privileges.
When I opened the box, it brought a smile to my face because as a kid I collected baseball cards. For years, I had been searching for a Mickey Mantle card. I must have gone through thousands upon thousands of cards until one day my search came to an end. When I was 11 years old my grandfather presented me with a Mickey Mantle baseball card and my eyes lit up. I recall jumping up and down with joy and frantically and racing to place the precious card in its protective case. I felt like I was on top of the world!
That feeling of grasping something you’ve been yearning for, for so long, is a feeling that I will never forget. It’s sort of the like the feeling you get when the famous Prize Patrol shows up at your doorstep with flowers and balloons. Only this time instead of a baseball card, it’s a life-changing SuperPrize®. So what are you waiting for? Enter to win one of our sweepstakes and capture your winning moment!
