Throwback Thursday: Prize Patrol Member Todd Sloane
For many of us, the name Todd Sloane is synonymous with Publishers Clearing House. As PCH fans, you’ve seen Todd in our TV commercials and promotions as one of the faces of the PCH Prize Patrol. As PCH employees, we know Todd as an influential thought leader and a driving force behind many of the exciting things we’re doing today. For over 30 years, Todd’s hard work and creativity has made a difference at PCH. That’s why today, for Throwback Thursday, we wanted to take a look back at Todd’s early years with the company.
Todd has held a number of positions here and is currently Sr. Vice President of Creative. Here’s something I’ll bet you didn’t know, Todd’s first job at Publishers Clearing House was sorting mail. That’s right! As a college student, Todd worked at PCH part-time one summer. Lucky for us, PCH hadn’t seen the last of him.
Some time later, Todd applied for a full-time position at PCH. In response, he received a letter from personnel. Explains Todd, “they said they didn’t have a position that matched my experience, but I was welcome to come in for an exploratory interview.” That meeting led to Todd accepting a position within the company as an Associate Marketing Analyst. He was recently going through his office and found that very letter! Boy, are we glad that Todd didn’t give up and went for that interview, because a few years later he would have a big idea that would shake things up!
Later, when Todd was Advertising Coordinator at PCH, he had what he calls an “ah-ha moment. His team needed to notify the newest SuperPrize winner, and Todd had a revolutionary idea, “in the past, PCH would call winners on the phone to tell them they’ve won – but I thought, let’s just go knock on their door with the good news and videotape it!” That’s what they did; and the world-famous Prize Patrol was born.
To this day, if you win a SuperPrize, you won’t be notified by mail or telephone … you’ll know when the Prize Patrol is standing at your front door with flowers, balloons, champagne, and a “Big Check” with your name on it. The members of the Prize Patrol are the folks EVERYONE wants as visitors, and we have Todd to thank for this amazing phenomenon, immortalized in pop culture.
For Todd, there have been many important moments throughout the years at PCH, with lots more excitement in store in 2016. Exclaims Todd, “We’re planning on giving away more money this year than ever before – starting with the guaranteed $5,000 A Week “Forever” Prize on February 26th.” Remember everyone, if you win, that would mean $5,000 every single week for your life, plus after that, $5,000 a week for the life of someone you choose!
