You May Need To Practice Cursive For Signing Prize Checks!

Last Updated: July 16, 2014

There used to be an old saying that went, “the pen is mightier than the sword.” But maybe nowadays we need to change “the pen” to “the keyboard” as our more powerful weapon of choice!

Now that we’re in the 21st century, it seems like everyone has a smartphone, a tablet, or a desktop/laptop computer. That includes YOU (something tells me you’re not reading this blog on a printed piece of paper!) 🙂 But with all of these new devices, it seems like a classic method of communication is quickly disappearing — cursive or script handwriting!

Cursive Writing

While schools still teach children basic handwriting, there is less of an emphasis put on the famous connecting “loopy” handwriting commonly known as cursive. Cursive handwriting is how most of us were taught to make our signatures on documents, checks or other legally binding pieces of paper.

I can still vividly recall my teachers correcting my handwriting assignments, telling me to make one loop longer or to make a better connection from my “r’s” to my “o’s”. My handwriting has never been that great, cursive or otherwise, but at least I know how to do it, and I can sign my name when I have to!

Cursive

But with the increased presence of electronic transactions, signatures are becoming less and less common. Many today simply use their credit or debit cards for everything from online purchases to simple trips to the drug store. When I was a kid, I remember my mom paying for every big purchase at the grocery store with her checkbook — not anymore! In fact, I was recently at a bank website that asked me to “sign here” with just the click of a button!  What kind of signature is that? But I guess they still make it count!

All of this got me thinking about the prize checks that you could win from Publishers Clearing House. We have a feeling that most of you out there are able to sign your own name…and you’d better be ready to, if you were to win the $5,000 a week “Forever” Prize! Remember, if you win “Forever,” you’d receive $5,000 a week for your life, plus after that, $5,000 a week for the life of someone you choose. That would sure mean A LOT of prize checks coming in – why, you’d be signing your signature every week…and boy would that be worth it!

So get to practicing your signature just in case you need it. And of course, don’t forget to enter to win “Forever”! If you win, we could be asking for YOUR autograph every week!

P.S. – How would you sign the prize check if you brought it to the bank? Do you have a small, delicate signature? Or do you go big and bold like John Hancock on the Declaration of Independence? Tell us in the comments below!
