Founded in 1962 by TV legend Danny Thomas, St. Jude is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
On Wednesday, January 20th, Brooke, Lauren and I headed to Memphis, Tennessee to visit St. Jude. We were greeted by the hospital’s staff, then presented 2 Big Checks (one for $100,000.00 and the other for $50,000.00), to Laura, Steele and Kelly from the St. Jude team.
The presentation was not a total surprise as seen in our “winning moments” TV advertising; but it was exciting and heartwarming nonetheless.
After the presentation, we were given a tour of the St. Jude facility and research labs. What is most extraordinary about the place is that every member of the staff is always smiling and working hard to make the young patients’ hospital visits as warm and comfortable as possible. One can see costumed characters happily greeting visitors, waiting rooms decorated like cheerful parks, and hallways displaying the young patients’ colorful artwork. Truly significant and a welcome benefit for the patients’ families is that they never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food – so they can focus on what matters most: their children’s healing.
Back in 1962 the overall childhood cancer survival rate was 20 percent. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push that overall survival rate to more than 80 percent. And St. Jude is working to increase that rate to 90 percent. St. Jude won’t stop until no child dies from cancer.
All of us at Publishers Clearing House have been humbly honored to have such an internationally recognized institution as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital receive Giveback support — for the fourth year in a row, all made possible by YOUR Giveback participation. To one and all, our sincere thanks.
