Hey PCH fans, it’s April 15… and we all know what day that is. Tax day! Well – sure, but it’s also National Take a Wild Guess Day, when we celebrate hunches and guesses of all kinds. Haven’t we all had a gut feeling that led us down the right path at some point?

A Quick History

The word “guess” originated in the 1300s and is derived from the German gessen, but humankind has been making guesses since caveman days. I mean, how else would we know what mushrooms and berries to eat if someone didn’t take the guesswork out of it for us? Over centuries, scientists solved many mysteries of nature by making an educated guess and testing to see if it was true.

In 2010 a professional speaker (and, er, maybe comedian) named Jim Barber, came up with the idea for National Take a Wild Guess day in honor of the brave souls who make guesstimates on their taxes.
